Obituary for Ellen Garrison (Newby)

Ellen Newby Garrison, 89, a retired lab director for Eastern State Hospital and the old TB Hospital, widow of Ellis Orrin Garrison, died Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Lexington Country Place. She was born February 10, 1929 in Valley View, Kentucky, daughter of the late Oscar and Jessie Tudor Newby. Ellen was a graduate of Madison Central High School, attended Eastern Kentucky University and graduated from the St. Elizabeth Medical Technology Program at LaFayette, Indiana. She was a member of Paris First United Methodist Church where she was a member of Pineur Sunday School Class, GEMS, and served as a Sunday School teacher. She is survived by a daughter, Melissa (Don) Blackburn, Lexington; son, Ellis Brent (Dianne) Garrison, Paris; three grandchildren, Nicholas Blackburn, Jacob Garrison, Emily Garrison; a brother Claude (Lida) Newby; and two sisters, Ruth (Charles) Hall and Lee Peters. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth Saylor, Kathleen Kearns, Marilyn McAlister, Shirley Wilder and a nephew, Alan Taylor Hall. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home by Rev. Jerri Williams with burial in Paris Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Nicholas Blackburn, Jacob Garrison, Chuck Hall, Mike Newby, Allen Newby, Steve Wilder, Frank Wilder, and Charles Wilder. Honorary pall bearers will be Grover Sandlin Kearns, John Peters, Allen Ivey and Earl Clough. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Paris First United Methodist Church, or the charity of one’s choice.
