Obituary for James Ray Mastin

James R. Mastin, husband of Dorothy Jo Moreland Mastin, passed away on December 11, 2018. Mastin was born in Middletown, Ohio on February 21, 1935 to the late Lewis K. and Ona Ransdell Mastin and was educated at the Bourbon County Vocational High School where he played varsity basketball. After high school he served as a supply Sargent for the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 in Stuttgart, Germany.
After 31 years of employment with IBM, Mr. Mastin retired in December of 1989 as the Superintendent of Plastics and Machining. While employed at IBM he played baseball, softball, and basketball for the IBM leagues. He was also an elected member of the Bourbon County Board of Education. He retired to his farm in Bourbon County where he continued to raise cattle, hay and tobacco. He was an avid fisherman and two time winner of the Lake Weiss Alabama Crappie Championship, along with his fishing partner Bill Sims. He was a devoted member of the Ruddles Mill Christian Church where over the years he served as a Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Youth Sponsor for 20 years, Deacon and Elder.
Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his daughter Mae Jo (Hamza Malik) Mastin and son James “D.D.” Mastin. He was a beloved grandfather to Andrew (Kayla) Dawson, Lauren E. Dawson, Matthew, Zachary and Grayson Mastin and a great granddaughter Addilyn Walters. Also surviving is a sister, Arlene (Jim) Berry of Versailles and a brother, Jack Mastin of Cynthiana and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Mastin of Dayton, Ohio.

Mastin will be held at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with Bro. Bruce Templeton officiating. Interment will follow at Battlegrove Cemetery in Cynthiana, KY with Casket Bearers being Andrew Dawson, Matthew Mastin, Zachary Mastin, Brad Emmons, Mike Mastin, Vernon Kelly, George Robinson and Barry Moreland. Honorary bearers are Jim Ellington, Frank Mastin, Danny Bell, Don Menke, David Wilhoit, Jimmy Wilhoit, David Duncan, R.C. Sanders, Jim Spoonmore and John Ransdell. The family request visitation on Thursday evening, December 13, 2018 between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home.
