John Lewis Rainey, 89, Thatchers Mill Road, North Middletown, a farmer, husband of 63 years to Anna May Bartlett Rainey, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Bourbon Community Hospital. He was born September 7, 1922 in Clark County, son of the late John Lewis Sr. and Hazel Wilder Rainey and was educated in the Clark County School system. He served in the Army during World War II under General George Patton in Germany. There he helped to destroy Hitler's hideaway, The Eagle's Nest, and helped to free concentration camps. After the war he came back to Bourbon County and started his life long career in farming. Mr. Rainey was a 60+ year member of the North Middletown Christian Church where he was a Deacon Emeritus. He served his community of North Middletown in many capacities, as a magistrate, cemetery board member, and a founding member of the now defunct Ruritan Club, which is now the Community Club. He served along with his wife as chairman of the North Middletown Horse Show where they won many awards as the "Best One Night Show in Kentucky". He is also survived by a son, John Franklin Rainey, Bourbon County; a daughter, Sara Ann (Clayton) Chamberlain, Bourbon County; a sister, Gertrude Hatton, Winchester; two brothers, Fred (Helen) Rainey, Homestead, FL, Lynval Stephens, Edwardsburg, MI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd Rainey, William Minor Rainey, Cecil Hanson, Leon Rainey; and a sister, Beulah Carpenter. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, at North Middletown Christian Church by Rev. Bob Silvanik with burial in North Middletown Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Bill Dickson, Tommy Mattox, Bill Burns, Palmer Hatton Jr., Tony Hatton, and Arthur B. Hancock III. Honorary bearers will be Don Taylor, Rex Rawlings, David Bugg, Billy G. Rainey, Gary Himes, Greg Himes, and the Christian Men's Fellowship of North Middletown Christian Church. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to North Middletown Volunteer Fire Department or North Middletown Cemetery.
