Obituary for Betty Brown Lastinger (Pennington)

Betty Brown Pennington Lastinger, age 96, widow of Donald Ray Lastinger, died Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Lexington Country Place. She was born December 23, 1925 in Paris, daughter of the late William O. and Ruby Shropshire Pennington.
Betty was a graduate of Paris High School, Virginia Intermont Junior College, attended Northwestern University, and received her Masters of Education degree from the University of Kentucky. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman’s Club of Central Kentucky, Chi Omega sorority, Phi Theta Kappa, and Daughters of the King at Church of the Good Shepherd. She taught school for 36 years in the Fayette County schools, the University School, the Lexington School, and the Haines City public schools in Florida.
In her younger days, Betty enjoyed being a church choir mother, kindergarten teacher, member of the church school board, and participated in the Good Shepherd choir, bell choir, and member of the Altar Guild.
In her retirement years, she was an avid golfer. She was a member of Big Elm Country Club, an early member of the Fayette Women’s Golf Association , and the Central Kentucky Golf Association. She often competed in the Kentucky Senior Women’s State Tournament. She enjoyed golf trips with friends to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee and Charleston, South Carolina. Locally, on Tuesday and Thursdays, she could be found on a variety of local courses well into her mid-80’s.
Betty is survived by her children, Julie Lastinger and Kirt Lastinger, both of Lexington.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Good Shepherd Episcopal on East Main Street at Bell Court in Lexington, KY, followed by burial at Jacksonville Cemetery, 1180 Russell Cave Road, Cynthiana KY. www.hintonturner.com
