Obituary for Glenda McKenzie (Stone)

Glenda Stone McKenzie passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on November 26, 2022, at the age of 79. She had suffered a lengthy illness without complaint and always remained more concerned with others than herself.

She was preceded in death by her parents T.H. and Ruth Stone and her beloved sister Cecia Campbell. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James G. McKenzie; her sons James Marshall (Kerri) McKenzie and Scott (Lara) McKenzie; five grandchildren Morgan, Colton, Parker, Holden, and Harper; and two dear sisters-in-law Marylu Gowen and Lynn Willis, and their families.

Glenda was born on February 28, 1943, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, a community that was an essential part of her identity. She graduated from Valdosta State University and worked as a social worker and educator before relocating to central Kentucky in the late seventies. She was a vital partner in establishing The Spring Place thoroughbred horse farm in Bourbon County before re-entering the workplace outside of the home, highlighted by more than 20 years at Bourbon Heights Inc. where she developed award-winning programs and activities for patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other conditions.

She loved living in central Kentucky for almost fifty years. But Glenda never lost her Georgia accent and her love of deeply southern storytelling. She was known for expressively warm hugs and a penchant for putting the needs of others ahead of her own.

A public celebration of Glenda McKenzie’s life will be held in 2023. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Bluegrass Care Navigators 1773 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, KY 40504, who provided loving and professional hospice care. www.hintonturner.com
