Obituary for Merle Mark Wasson

Merle Mark Wasson, husband of Janice Wasson, departed this life unexpectedly at his residence in Paris, on Friday, August 16, 2019, having attained the age of 78 years. He was born on July 20, 1941, in Paris, the son of the late Leonard A. and Virginia Wasson. He was a graduate of the 1959 class of Bourbon County High, as well as attaining his B.S. from the University of Kentucky, College of Engineering, and worked as a Civil Engineer. He served his country in the United States Army, serving in Vietnam, retiring from the Public Health Service, with a rank of Captain, from the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. He was the first sanitation director at the National Institute of Health, past member of the National Professional Engineers Association and a member of Little Rock Christian Church, having been a past deacon.

Merle created fine art images of wildlife and landscapes from around the world. He also photographed racehorses of the Bluegrass and did aerial photography of horse farms. Merle covered outdoor events such as roundups, barbeques, or hunting events for clients. He has traveled to all continents with a camera. His photographs have appeared in Sierra magazine, several national calendars, National Park publications, postcards, and numerous publications on wildlife and wildflowers.

Besides his wife, Janice, he is survived by two sons, Mark Wasson (D.J.) and Christopher Wasson (Melissa); a step-son, Brian Brown (Acharee); and five grandsons. Also surviving are two sisters, Gloria Smits and Joan Boardman, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service for Merle Mark Wasson will be on Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at 10:00 a.m., at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Rex Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Paris Cemetery with casket bearers being, Dr. Robert Biddle, Dan Sylvestri, Harold Soper, Rex Rawlings, Joel Schooler and Donald Shaw. Honorary bearers are Steve Dennis, Greg Sallee, Jesse Turner, Larry Elliott and the Bourbon County High School Class of 1959.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 19, 2019, at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home between the hours of 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
