Obituary for Stuart James Burns

Dr. Stuart James Burns, age 80, a veterinarian and veteran of the United States Air Force, husband of Jane Romein Burns, died Saturday, April 8, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 11, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, son of the late Eric Stanford and Ruth Derby Niles Burns. Dr. Burns received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University and Masters Degree from Texas A&M University.
He had been a professor at Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and had been on staff at Hagyard, Davidson, and McGee as well as working with Dr. Gordon Layton before starting his own practice, B.E.V.S. Dr. Burns was well known for his equine reproduction research and had authored many published works. He enjoyed raising Thoroughbred horses, Quarter Horses, and Texas Longhorn cattle. Dr. Burns owned and operated his own bourbon distillery, Flat Run Distillery and was an accomplished orator, capable of reciting many poems from memory.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Burns; three children, Dr. Travis Romein (Lindsey) Burns, Richard Eric Burns, Claire Elizabeth (Daniel Riffe) Burns; a sister, Kaye L. Burns; and two grandchildren, Owen Romein Burns and Eva Marian Burns.
