Barbara Galloway Bands, 80, of 2000 Main Street, Paris, KY, formerly of Ceredo, WV, and Winchester, KY, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011, at Bourbon Community Hospital in Paris. Mrs. Bands was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Huntington, WV, and attended The Church of the Annunciation in Paris, KY. She was born August 25, 1930, in Winchester, KY to the late Jesse E. and Paulina S. Owen Galloway. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother as well as two wonderful golden retrievers, Maggie and Molson. Mrs. Bands is survived by an only son, William L. Bands (Debra) of Charleston, WV, one sister, Marjorie Crawford (Harold) of Winchester, KY, and two brothers, John L. Galloway (Karen) of Paris, KY, and Dr. Harry L. Galloway (Sue) of Whiteville, NC, and seven nieces and nephews: Connie Tur, Winchester, KY, Teresa Elliott, Lexington, KY, Gordon Mercer, Midlothian, VA, Kelly Willoughby, Richmond, KY, Bethany Wilson, Nancy, KY, Jeffrey Galloway, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Dwight Galloway, Gatlinburg, TN, and 12 grandnieces and nephews and one special, best friend, Martha Wells.
Mrs. Bands was a graduate of Clark County High School and Fugazzi Business School. She was employed by General Electric in Lexington, KY, and in 1995 retired from Corbin, Limited in Cannonsburg, KY, where she was administrative assistant to the vice-president. She was a wonderful mother, sister, sister-in-law and aunt to her family. She moved back to Winchester in 1998 and reconnected with many friends and high school classmates. She loved the once-a-month lunches with her 1948 classmates and treasured their close friendships.
Her love for animals brightened her life and she brightened theirs. She was a supporter of the Winchester-Clark County Animal Shelter. She was a well-known figure on the sidewalks of Ceredo, WV, as she walked her granddog, Molson. When the city passed a leash law, they continued on their way with Molson holding his own leash in his mouth as they walked. After Molson's death, she adopted Maggie, another golden retriever who was already six years old. They lived together, walking each other along Winchester's streets until Maggie passed away in 2009.
Mrs. Bands was also a huge sports fan. Her favorite sport was football, especially Marshall University. She and her son, Bill, who is a Marshall alum, spent many hours together tailgating the Marshall home games where she had season tickets. She was their biggest fan to the point of enrolling in football classes taught by Marshall's head football coach. While living in Ceredo and Huntington she attended many of MSU games cheering them to two NCAA Division II national titles. She followed Marshall players when they were drafted into the NFL and watched them on TV. She could--and did--rattle off their accomplishments as pros. At her home in Winchester there was always a Marshall sign in the window and every game day she wore her Marshall green. She was their biggest fan.
Graveside services will be held at the Chapel in the Paris Cemetery at 2 PM on January 28, 2011, with Father John Curtis officiating. Hinton-Turner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local animal shelter.
