Carrie Mae Shumate, 96, widow of Clifford Theodore Shumate, died Monday, March 22, 2010. She was born November 22, 1913 in Estill County, daughter of the late Isaac and Sarah Rose Spivey, a graduate of North Middletown High School, and was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Mrs. Shumate was a founder of Blue Grass Industries and retired after serving as supervisor, product manager, general manager, director of manufacturing serving as manager of employment, training, and production. She was active in many civic and community organization such as Past Worthy Matron and Patron of Marie Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Life Contributing Members of the OES Home of KY, Nicholas County Historical Society, charter member of the Nicholas County Health Care Auxiliary, and was named Woman of Achievement by the Paris Business and Professional Women's Club in Paris. Mrs. Shumate is survived by three grandchildren, Clifford Wayne (Kim) Shumate, Jr., Sara Paige Shumate (Dan) Short, Jeffrey Thomas (Victoria) Myers; five great grandchildren, Bryan Shumate (Rachael) Short, Kaylyn Bailey Shumate, Ian Michael Myers, Joshua Taylor Myers, Stephanie Michelle Abney; five great, great grandchildren, Bryson Shumate Short, Jacob Bradley Vainio, Layla An-Rene Freeland, Ava Myers, Alexis Myers; two sisters, Hallie Linville, Virginia Crump; and a daughter-in-law, Kay George Shumate. She was preceded in death by a son, Clifford Wayne Shumate, Sr.; a daughter, Rose Carol Shumate; and a grandson, Stephen Anthony Myers. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 26, at the First Christian Church by Rev. Jeff Bell with burial in Evergreen Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church Renovation Fund or OES Home of KY, 923 Eastern Star Ct., Louisville, KY 40204.
