Dorothy Speakes Moreland, 90, widow of Lucius Moreland, Jr., passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from Parkinson's Disease. Mrs. Moreland, born and raised in Bourbon County was a lifelong resident. She was the daughter of Mattie Neal and Harry Davis Speakes. Mrs. Moreland was educated in Paris City Schools and Ruddles Mill High School. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Lucius "Buddy" Moreland; and brothers William T. "Billy" Speakes and his wife Mildred, Harry Davis "Sonny" Speakes and his wife Juanita; and her sister, Mrs. Frank (Minerva) Mitchell. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Jo and James Ray Mastin; three grandchildren, Barry Paul Moreland and wife Susan, Mae Jo Biddle and her husband Max, and James "DD" Mastin and wife Traci. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren, namely Barry and Whitney Moreland, Andrew and Lauren Dawson, Matthew, Zachary, and Grayson Mastin, and Courtney and Whitney Biddle. She is also survived by three nieces, Mrs. Forrest (Nancye) Fightmaster, Mrs. Gordon (Pat) Wilson, Mrs. David (Kay) Edwards; and a nephew, Thomas Mitchell of Dayton, TN. Mrs. Moreland was a retired farmer and store owner. She and her husband, Lucius, operated Moreland's Store at Shawhan for many years. Known for her quick wit, charm, and stylish dress, she was a member of the Ruddles Fort Homemakers for over 50 years and served as treasurer of that organization for 25 years. She was also a member of the Ruddles Mill Christian Church and attended the Berean Class until she became totally disabled. She also was a member of the Ruddles Mill High School Alumni and served as treasurer of that organization. Grandsons D.D. Mastin, Matthew and Zachary Mastin, Andrew Dawson, Barry Paul Moreland, and Barry Moreland, Jr., Max Biddle, and G. Davis Wilson will serve as pall bearers. Carl Wayne Hafley, John Galloway, Gordon Slade, Billy Wyatt, Bob Snapp, Mike Kearns, and Officers of the Ruddles Mill Christian Church will serve as honorary bearers. Services will be conducted by Brother John McGuire at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home on Saturday, April 3, at 10:00 a.m. with burial in the Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
