Gladys Lair Rion Santen, 97, died at 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Born September 16, 1913, she was the only child of Ethel Lair and Houston Rion. She was a graduate of Paris High School and a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). On February 9, 1934 Gladys and John B. Santen were married and they were together until John's death in 1999.
Gladys was interested in many things, but three of her greatest passions were her family, books, and all things British. She devoted herself to raising her four children and was happiest when all her family gathered for holidays, birthdays, or reunions. She was very knowledgeable about her ancestors and the role they played in the history of Bourbon County.
To say the she was an avid reader is an understatement. Growing up, books were gateways through which she traveled far and wide. She continued to enjoy reading even when it became difficult for her to see, and at age 95 was still learning when she read a book on quantum physics. She passed her love of books and reading along to each of her children.
While her children were in school, Gladys was active in the PTA. She served as president of the Bourbon County Hospital Auxiliary and was a Cub Scout leader. She was a member of the June Stanley Circle at First Christian Church.
Gladys is survived by two of her four children: Lynne (Ken) Lewis and Joan (Lyall) Luff; her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Santen; grandchildren Laura, Andrew, John, and Peter McDonald; Leigh Lewis, Christie (Luke) Young; Dave (Michaela) Santen, Bill Santen, and Julia Santen; and nine great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, John; her daughter, Audrey; and her son, David Santen. Her cat, Woody, was a faithful and loving companion for the last 11 years.
The family expresses appreciation to all who did many nice things for Gladys over the years, particularly her neighbors, Joan and Bill Ferguson, Vivian Hunt, and Mary McDonald, and especially her friend and primary care giver, Viola Ritchie. Her help has been invaluable.
Memorial services will be held at First Christian Church on Saturday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to time of service in the church sanctuary. Everyone is invited to a reception at the church immediately following. Memorials are suggested to PAWS, PO Box 222, Paris, KY 40362.
