Louis Elvove, 96, Massie Avenue, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at his home. He was preceded in death recently by his wife of 72 years Nannie Weaver Elvove. He was born April 22, 1911 in Paris, KY, son of the late Simma Leah and Jacob M. Elvove. Mr. Elvove is survived by ten children Marjorie (Alan) Lager, FL, Marilyn (William G.) Crouch, OK, Nancy (Oties, Jr.) West, Paris, Joseph (Rosemarie) Elvove, Paris, Louis J. (Ruth) Elvove, Paris, Rebecca Smith, TX, Regina Elvove, AZ, Rose Marie (Carl) Thomas, Paris, Charles E. Kelly, AZ, Elizabeth (Bland) Ballard, Paris; a brother, Elias (Barbara) Elvove; a sister Sara Elvove; 25 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; 14 great, great grandchildren; 5 nephews; 1 niece; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Louis was a graduate of Paris High School, Class of 1928, the University of KY, Class of 1932, and a life-long resident of Paris. He started his 55 year career with the City of Paris in 1932 as assistant bookkeeper and ended in 1987 as City Clerk serving under five mayors. During his tenure he also acted as Acting City Manager, Police Judge Pro-Tem, and in various other capacities. A headline in the March 23, 1997 Lexington Leader proclaimed him "Mr. City Hall" and another declared the statement most often heard at City Hall was "Ask Louie." He was listed in Who's Who in America; a lifetime member of the University of KY Alumni Association, a charter member and founder of the Paris City Club, commissioned an Honorary KY Colonel in 1986, recognized by Governor Wallace Wilkinson for dedicated service to the Commonwealth of KY in 1989. He served with distinction as a Charter Member, Secretary and Treasurer (1939-50), Secretary (1951-52), and Director (1953) of the Paris-Bourbon County Chamber of Commerce. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Paris Cemetery immediately followed by a Memorial Visitation at Hinton Turner Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Casket Bearers include his grandsons and close family friends.
Honorary bearers are Carl Thomas, Bland Ballard, Alan Lager, William G. Crouch, Sr., Oties West Jr., Mark Long, Samuel Clay, III, and Sam Calvin Roe. The family wishes to extend it's heartfelt thanks to Nancy West, Betty Ballard, Rebecca Elvove, Michele West and Debbie Lowe for their special care in the last few years. In lieu of cut flowers the family requests donations to Hospice of the Bluegrass or Temple Adath Israel Lexington KY.
