Louise Rodes Wilson Alverson, 90, widow of Sanford Allen Alverson, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 after a very brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Mary Ford Rodes and Horace H. Wilson of Lexington. She is survived by her three daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary Louise and David Fisher (Lexington), Elizabeth and Cary Barr(Lexington) and Lucy and Keith Trent (Charlotte, NC) and seven grandchildren, Louise Rodes and David B. Fisher, Carrie Elizabeth, William Sanford and Robert Daniel Barr and William Garrett and Layman Wilson Trent. Other survivors include cousins, Allen (Charlotte) Rodes (Lexington), Catherine (Bill) Turner (Nashville, TN), and nieces and nephews, Beth Sumpter, Barbara Beard, Bill Worthington and Bill Alverson.
Louise was a native of Lexington, KY. She attended University High, Henry Clay High School and graduated from Arlington Hall, Washington, D.C. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in Health and Recreation and Physical Education and received her masters' degree in Physical Education from Columbia University, New York City.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Paris, member of the "Emily Smith" Sunday school class, Morning Mission Action Circle, former Sunday school teacher and Girls Auxiliary leader.
She was very active in both the Paris and Lexington communities. She was a preservationist and her home "Albemarle" is listed with the National Register of Historic Homes. She hosted the Paris - Bourbon County YMCA fundraiser and the Home and Garden Tour for Historic Paris-Bourbon County. She served as a board member and leader of the former Central Kentucky Wilderness Road Girl Scouts, member of Historic Paris-Bourbon County, Inc. (Hopewell Museum), Stoner Creek Country Club and former board member of Nicholas - Bourbon County University of Kentucky Alumni Association. In Lexington she was a sustainer, emeritus of the Junior League of Lexington, member of Captain John McKinley D.A.R., Idle Hour Country Club and Keeneland Club. She was also a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Life Member of the UK Alumni Association and UK Fellows
Louise, and husband, Sanford, were farmers and thoroughbred breeders for over 25 years. They were consignors of Barbs Delight which placed second in the Kentucky Derby in 1967.
Being interested in athletics her entire life, she was the former assistant director Women's and Girls Activities, City of Lexington Recreation Department and served on a committee to attain full-time physical education teachers in the Paris City Schools. She was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky basketball and football teams and played tennis and golf regularly throughout her life. She loved watching her grandchildren participating in sports; swimming, soccer, baseball, football, tennis, golf and horse shows.
Louise was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was devoted to her church, her family and her many wonderful friends. She loved to travel but always said there was no better place to live than Kentucky. She recognized she had a wonderful life and told her family many times if she could live her life over, she would not change a thing. She was an incredible role model for her children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday, March 27 at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home with funeral services Monday at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church by Rev. Gary Ellcessor with burial in the Paris Cemetery.
Pall bearers will be her grandsons, Bill and Daniel Barr, David Fisher and Garrett and Wilson Trent, nephews Bill Worthington and Bill Alverson and Timmy Sosby. Honorary pall bearers will be, David Fisher, Cary Barr, Keith Trent, Allen Rodes, Bill Turner, Tinder Harris, James Nelson Sumpter, and Stanley Wiley. Louise also requested her many wonderful friends be honorary pall bearers.
