On February 3rd, 2011, Marvin L. Copher departed this earthly life and made his was to his heavenly home. He was the faithful husband of his wife of 65 years, Thelma Dean Lynam Copher. The son of the late J.P. and Pearl Downs Copher, Marvin was born in Bath County, KY and then moved with his family to Bourbon County. He attended Center Hill High School and graduated from Clintonville High in 1944.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind five children; daughter, Phyllis Anne (Stan) Mattox, Paris, son, Daniel L. Copher and his partner Leland Owens, Lauderdale-by-the Sea, FL, daughter, Ramona Katherine Copher, Bourbon County, daughter, Jill D. (John) England, Columbia, KY, and son, Lt. Col (Ret) Jan Lynam (Georgina) Copher, Oakwood, OH; eight grandchildren, R. Travis (Jennifer) Mattox, Paris, Matthew Thomas (Paige) Mattox, Nicholasville, KY, Katherine Elizabeth (Anthony) Basham, Berea, KY, Stephen Mark Racz II, Bowling Green, KY, Lindsey Ellen Wedding and Joshua Michael Wedding, Louisville, Eloise Marie and Andrew Lynam Copher, Oakwood, OH; and five great-grandchildren, Clark Copher Mattox and Jesse Asher Mattox, Paris, Camryn Reese Mattox and Matthew Tucker Mattox, Nicholasville, and Henry Jameson Basham, Berea.
Also surviving are two sisters, Edith Copher Jones, Paris, and Rebecca Copher Hemphill, Lake Charles, Louisiana, as well as many nieces and nephews and the family dog, Greta.
Aside from his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Marvina Dean Copher; brothers, Fred and Lloyd Copher; sisters Juanita Thomas, Virginia Bartlett, and Delores Sagesar.
Marvin was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the infantry in the European Theater. He was wounded while in battle in Germany. Among his military honors were the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He attended Paris First United Methodist Church. Marvin had also been a realtor with various local companies. He was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years.
A life-long farmer, he respected the earth God had given him to toil. He was known for his large gardens which provided family and friends with lots of tasty fruits and vegetables. During these last few weeks in the hospital he was still planning for the upcoming gardening season and had many seed catalogs by his bedside.
He had served on many boards in the farming community as well as his church home.
Marvin was bestowed the honor of Kentucky Colonel by former Gov. Martha Layne Collins.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 7, at the First Methodist Church by Rev. Jerri Williams with burial in the Paris Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Richard Travis Mattox, Matthew T. Mattox, Anthony Basham, Stephen M. Racz II, Joshua Wedding and Jack Thomas. Honorary bearers will be Katherine E. Basham, Lindsey E. Wedding, Eloise Copher, Andrew Lynam Copher, Clark C. Mattox, Jesse Asher Mattox, Camryn R. Mattox, M. Tucker Mattox, and Henry J. Basham. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the church.
