Col. Melvin Earl Hampton Jr. (USAR-RET), 88, widower of Nancy Crowe Hampton, veteran of World War II and the Korean War, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was born December 3, 1927 in Scott County, son of the late Melvin Earl and Violet Dunn Hampton. Melvin was a graduate of Center Hill High School, attended Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, former secretary and treasurer of the Kentucky State Reserve Officers Association, and was a member of Silas Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, David Earl (Priscilla) Hampton, Paris; a daughter, Olivia "Libby" (Harry) Ritchie, Bourbon County; five grandchildren, Jay (Angie) Ritchie, Laura (Christian) Ernest, Leslie (Kevin) Spalding, Joshua Hampton, Eric Hampton; two great grandsons, Alton Boone, Charlie Spalding; and two sisters, Betty VanMeter, Paris, and Aline Whitecotton, Cynthiana. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 11, at Silas Baptist Church by Rev. Curtis Coots with burial in Paris Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Joshua Hampton, Eric Hampton, Daniel VanMeter, Andrew VanMeter, William Brogli, and Michael Brogli. Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church.
