Mendel Jasper "Bud" Speer, 85, Georgetown Road, Centerville, husband of 60 years to Mary Elizabeth Roberts Speer, died Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Bourbon Community Hospital. He was born November 26, 1922 in Bedford, Indiana, son of the late Floyd Delbert and Lela Allen Speer. Mendel served in the Civilian Conservation Corps until honorably discharged on March 2, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II until honorably discharged as a Technician-4th Grade on February 25, 1946. He worked as a contract bulldozer operator throughout Central Kentucky for nearly 30 years and was a 50 year member of Local Union #181, International Union of Operating Engineers. In addition to his wife, Mendel is survived by two grandsons, SFC Patrick D. Waddell, U.S. Army, Scott Air Force Base, IL, MAJ Mendel D. Waddell, U.S. Army, Fort Knox, KY; four great grandchildren, Kelsey, Timothy, Kasey Jo, and Michael Waddell; five sisters, Peggy (Jack) Gooldy, Bloomington, IN, Patricia (Chuck) Swisher, Savannah, IL, Maxine Anderson, Doalin, IN, Millison Younger, Bedford, IN, Elizabeth Hancock, Bloomington, IN; and a half brother, Ronald Elkins, Bloomington, IN. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Ann Speer Waddell; a half brother, Donald Elkins; and his stepfather, Riley Elkins. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 25, at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home by Pastor Jill Ruhl and Hospice Chaplain David Carper with interment in the Old Union Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Waddell, Patrick Waddell, George Profit, Ronnie Shrout, Tom Hay, Wayne Logan, Jerry White, Malcolm Witt, Kelly Pennington, and Shelton Roberts. Honorary bearers will be Jewel Shephard, Al Easley, Billy Jo Shrout, Dr. Murray West, Pat Ameche, Buddy Mastin, Buck Rutledge, Gayle Martin, Joe Fryman, Dr. Samuel Pierce, J.W. Roberts, Jr., Jack Gooldy, Chuck Swisher, and Benny Garland. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Bourbon Heights Activity Fund or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
