Pietertje "Peachie" Smits Wright, 92, died Thursday, March 31, at Friendship Manor in Peewee Valley. She was born in Hoffddorp, The Netherlands and immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1921 and lived her adult life in Lexington. Peachie was preceded in death by her husband, John Ward Wright, and sister, Johanna Smits Carter. She graduated from Paris High School and in 1940 graduated from Berea College. A wartime activity was instructing citizens how to make bed mattresses through the Fayette County Extension Service. Other activities included chairman of Fayette County Farm Bureau Women, 4-H leader, volunteer at UK Medical Center and God's Pantry. She was a member of Leestown Homemakers for over 60 years and was an avid UK basketball fan. She was a lifetime member of Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church and active in the women's group and a member of the Church Banners group that made 40 silk banners that are displayed in the church. The Wrights hosted many outings and church picnics for the youth groups. She was an accomplished seamstress and ultimate hostess having planned many luncheons and parties for thoroughbred owners and trainers. Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis W. Kirkland, Adrian, GA, Mary Frances Pack, Louisville, and Patty W. Greer, Lexington; three grandchildren, David Courtney (Susan) Kirkland Jr., Moultrie, GA, Sarah K. (Daniel) Hutcheson, Soperton, GA, Ethel K. Hagans, Adrian, GA; six great grandchildren; and a nephew, Ray Carter, Lexington. Special thanks to the staff of Friendship Manor for their excellent care and compassion for the last year of her life. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church by Dr. Woody Berry. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to Maxwell St. Presbyterian Church, 180 E Maxwell St, Lexington, KY 40508 or Berea College.
