Stanley Smith Dickson, 78, of Louisville, KY died October 14, 2009, surrounded by his family.
Dickson was born in North Middletown, KY, 1931, and worked for the Bell System for 36 years. His final position was President of Kentucky operations for Bell South, 1980-1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents Stanley Smith and Mildred Collins Dickson and his sister Algernon Dickson Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Roberta Moberley Dickson. He has two children, William "Bill" Moberley Dickson (Vanessa) and Mary Louise "Mollie" Dickson Shook (Andrew) and eight grandchildren: Chelsea, Allie, and Henry C. Dickson; Mary Virginia B., E. Anne Dickson, and A. Parker Shook, Jr.; and Meredith M. and William R. Berge.
Dickson was a graduate of North Middletown High School, The McCallie School, and the University of Kentucky. He was a First Lieutenant, U. S. Army Signal Corps., and member of Calvary Episcopal Church.
His passion for Kentucky culture and bluegrass music spanned throughout his lifetime. He was an avid supporter of the UK College of Agriculture, Phi Delta Theta, and UK basketball. He was an Eagle Scout and an assistant Scout Master.
Dickson was especially interested in genealogy and proud that his family farm, Glen Oak, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was named one of Kentucky's five bicentennial farms in 1992.
He served as Chairman of Norton Kosair Children's Hospital, Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, United Way, and was vice chairman of the James Graham Brown Foundation. He served on the boards of the Kentucky Opera Association, Kentucky Center for the Arts, Pritchard Committee, Governor's Scholars Program, and Banc One.
In his free time he enjoyed his family, grandchildren, farming, traveling, fishing and exercising at Milestone Fitness Center.
Mr. Dickson's family is very grateful for the compassionate care he received from Maria E. King and the staff at The Forum at Brookside.
Visitation will take place Saturday October 17, 2009 from 1-3:30 pm at Calvary Episcopal Church Louisville, KY with a memorial service to follow at 4 pm. A second visitation will be Sunday October 18, 2009 1-4 pm at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home Paris, KY. The Commitment will follow at 5 pm Sunday at the North Middletown Cemetery.
