Willette Brown "W.B." Stiles, 81, died Monday, December 20, 2010 at the St. Joseph Hospice Care Center, Lexington, KY. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey Looney Stiles. A native of Stiles, Kentucky where his father, Willette Stiles, was a farmer, country store operator, and a postmaster. His mother, Emma May Brown, originally was from Texas and died after celebrating the couple's Golden Anniversary. Stiles was a graduate of Hodgenville High School and majored in Business Management at the University of Kentucky. His career included twenty-two years service in finance company management with Time Financial Company and CIT Corporation. For a brief period he worked in the Financial Assistance Department of Kentucky Business College before entering the field of motel management from which he retired at age 70. His motel career included management of Knights Inn in Richmond and Lexington, Shoney's and Day's Inn in Lexington, and Flag Inn in Georgetown. Stiles helped supervise the opening of the new Shoney's on Richmond in the late eighties. A "people person", he loved the interaction with the public.
An avid sports fan, he attended UK football games for many years. For 34 years he served as either a score keeper or statistician for the Paris High School basketball and football games. For outstanding service to Paris High sports, Stiles was selected for membership in both the Paris Greyhound Hall of Fame and the Tenth Region Hall of Fame. For twenty years Stiles and his wife, Audrey, resided in Paris where their three children were active in Greyhound sports programs. His wife was a teacher for the Paris Independent School System for twenty-nine years and continued part time work with the system for several years. When his grandson entered middle school in 2001, Stiles changed his allegiance to South Oldham basketball in Crestwood. Both he and his wife never missed a game during the grandson's high school basketball career. However, his love for the Greyhounds never ceased. At half-time of one Paris basketball game one of the players said excitedly, "We're going to win this game for W.B", and they did.
An active member of the Jaycees and Kiwanis Clubs, Stiles served as a president of the Paris Kiwanis Club and the North Lexington Club. He was a Donovan Scholar and a member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Club. A graduate of the Citizen Police Academy and a member of C.P.A.C., he assisted with several projects with the local police department.
A decorated veteran of the Korean War, Stiles was an active member of a local Korean War Association, Chapter 219, and the American Legion. As a state membership director, he successfully promoted new Korean veteran membership throughout Kentucky.
Stiles was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King, where he served as an usher. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife, Audrey, were co-chairmen of the Senior Ministry Program at Christ the King.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Kevin (Laura) Stiles, Crestwood, KY; two daughters, Cathy Stile, Mandeville, LA, Dee Dee (Bill) Hanshaw, Nicholasville, KY; five grandchildren, Shelley and Sean Stiles, Tim and John Hanshaw, Crystal (Jason) Judd; a great grandchild, Jason Thomas Judd; a sister, Mary Lois Judy, Henderson, KY; and several nieces and nephews. He considered Sue LeBreton of Mandeville, LA, as another daughter and loved her as his child. Special friends and neighbors were Darrell and Anita Hudson-Jones and David and Leslie Hanich. Both neighbors were loyal friends and helped take care of the Stiles. W.B. and Audrey often have referred to Darrell as "second son."
