William Abraham Stephens, 84, was a retired teacher and counselor at Millersburg Military Institute and was a former counselor at Bourbon County High School and Middle School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill was a widower of Sarah Wiley Stephens and Barbara Bryan Stephens. He passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015, at the Hospice Care Center in Saint Joseph Hospital. He was born May 12, 1930, in Bardwell, Kentucky, and was the son of the late William A. and Gladys Polvick Stephens. Bill received his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Kentucky. He was an historian, a member of the Kentucky Civil War Round Table, a gun collector, a collector and evaluator of rare books, and was an avid wilderness area backpacker. Bill was a founding member, contributor, and supporter of the Hopewell Museum which he endowed with his extensive library of Kentucky books. He was a reading tutor for the Bourbon County Adult Literacy program and was involved with Loch Lea Antiques for many years. Bill is survived by his cousins, Maxwell Clay (Joyce) Bailey, Tampa, Florida, Mrs. Robert E. Turner, Paducah, Nancye B. Thompson, Lexington; two stepdaughters, Bonnie B. (Steve) Thornton, Lexington, Aimee B. (David) Severson, Wichita, Kansas; and a stepson, William B. (Susan) Bryan Jr., Lexington. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Andrea J. Bryan. The family expresses special appreciation to the administrators and staff of The Lafayette. A gathering to celebrate Bill's life will be held Saturday, April 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. st the Hopewell Museum, 800 Pleasant Street, Paris, KY. Memorials are suggested to Hopewell Museum.
