Roy Gatlin Simpson, widower of his beloved wife of 61 years, Dixie True Simpson, age 88, of Paris, departed this life peacefully, on Monday, November 25, 2019, at the Thomson-Hood Veteran’s Center with family by his side. He was born in Scott County on July 5, 1931, the son of the late Nova and Bertha Pope Simpson, a graduate of Bourbon County High School, and member of Crosswoods Baptist Church in Lexington. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War (1951-1955) having received the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, (European Clasp), China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. After serving his country he retired after 34 years from I.B.M. as a buyer. He thoroughly loved sports, and he was a basketball and baseball star himself, turning down an invitation to try out for the Cincinnati Reds to join the Navy. He loved watching the University of Kentucky basketball and football teams over the years, playing cards, traveling, and especially spending time with his family. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Nina Marshall, Virginia Leach, Myrtie Campbell as well as brothers, Leonard Simpson and Bobby Simpson.

Surviving are his children, a son, Gary Simpson (Kathy), and a daughter, Cheryl Wirfel (Kevin), both of Lexington; five grandchildren, Amanda Harris (Dave), Meredith Hager (Cory), Kelsey Ferguson (Branden), Ashley Wirfel, and Nathan Wirfel. Also surviving are great grand-children Jack Harris, Alex Harris, Macie Harris, Ava Harris, and Waverly Ferguson; two siblings survive, Marjorie Wright and Nova “Juny” Simpson, Jr. (Betty).

The funeral service for Roy Gatlin Simpson will be on Friday, November 29, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Bruce and Scotty True officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens with casket bearers being Larry Cassity, Billy Cassity, Larry Hay, Nathan Wirfel, Dave Harris, Cory Hager, and Branden Ferguson. Honorary bearers are Nova “Juny” Simpson Jr., and J.C. True. The family requests friends to call after 11:00 a.m. until time for the service.

A special thanks to the staff at Cedarhurst Living for the excellent care given to our dad, grandfather and brother. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Bluegrass Hospice Care or the Thomson-Hood Veteran’s Center.

Cheryl and family,
Was so sad to hear of the passing of Roy as I truly enjoyed our friendship through many years at IBM and beyond. I was with Teri when she received your text making her aware of your Dad's passing. I will always remember and cherish the times that Roy went with several of us IBM guys to Nashville to the country music DJ conventions. What a great time we had. I have kept up with Roy for the past few years by phone either by talking to him or just leaving him a message. We always had a few laughs about our past experiences together. What a great man he was and I will miss him. Our thoughts, prayers and love to you and your family.

My long time family friend and Birthday Boy Roy, has earned his heavenly wings and probably whistling Dixie all the way to the pearly gates. It was a pleasure to share our birthdays of July 5th. Had the opportunity a few year's back to buy his birthday breakfast at McDonald's. Please find comfort and peace with all his family, as he is in a much better place. RIP and thank you for serving our Country Roy. Love you Cheryl Ann🙏❤
